Mississippi had about 890,00 head of cattle in 2017. The 15,940 farms in the state accounted for $285 million value of production in 2017. The larger beef cattle inventories are located in the southern part of the state. Some 80 Grade A Dairy herds including 9,000 milk cows provide a $26 million value of production of milk. The state ranks #17 in production of hogs, accounting for a $117 million value of production. Hogs are grown on 306 farms with 1.2 million piglets born in 2017.
